We all know about these ads. The ones when you’re reading a page and a pop-up stops your reading pace. The kind when you scroll your mouse over a word and a little box appears trying to sell you something related to that keyword on a page.
I think the owners of these websites quickly loose visitor numbers due to these types of ads. I know I personally despise sites like these. I feel many others are the same way.
You bet there is. Following the standards that have been set by the major players in the web advertising business.
Currently there are two major types of ads that I am aware of.
1. Google’s ad-words. They are very subtle and effective if your a content driven person. You only notice them if your looking for something that you need, and usually Google is pretty good at displaying an ad related to what you need.
2. 180×150 Rectangle image, usually with some animations. I think these ads are a bit more effective than Google’s ad-words. The reason being because you can place your brand logo and your bright campaign message more effectively. The ads still need to be small in size and effective to work properly. However I think companies that place these ads on websites with the same topic seem to dominate the market.
For example, if you were looking for a WordPress theme you would find that you constantly see the same advertisements on all the major websites relating to WordPress. This is simply so effective. You are branding your company to say, we dominate this field, our themes are fantastic and we can afford to place them all over the web. You also gain what I like to call “Brain Imprinted Quality.” Whether the name is good or not it has meaning.
If people are used to seeing your advertisements all over the web, even if they never click them, they see your logo, your websites colors and your general message. At least they should be seeing this on your ads. Then when they end up landing on your website, its an instant feeling of relationship and comfortableness. They feel like your site is a valid and trust worthy. Google ad-words don’t have this benefit.
So in the end which is the best? Its up to the individual business owner. If you feel you have a strong company branding and you want to share that brand image and are prepared never to change it after all this marketing. Then go for the 180×150 image ads. They will be a bit more expensive and probably cost up front.
The most important thing is tracking your statistics. Find out which is driving the most traffic to your site. Then compare your numbers, and profit.
